A new grants initiative called Grand Challenges Explorations will help test novel concepts that have the potential to deliver major leaps forward in global health research.
Grand Challenges Explorations expands upon the original Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative, which was launched in 2003. To date, more that $450 million in grants support more than 40 different projects related to the 14 Grand Challenges.
The new initiative aims to:
• Encourage all scientists worldwide to participate
• Foster innovation by focusing on novel, higher-risk ideas.
• More quickly expand the pipeline of early- stage ideas that merit further evaluation in solving Grand Challenges in Global Health.
A Rapid Grants Approach
Grand Challenges Explorations represents a fast-track approach to grantmaking that complements the traditional Grand Challenges approach. Applicants for Explorations grants will be asked to submit short funding proposals, and will not necessarily be required to show preliminary data. Initially Projects projects will initially be funded at the level of US$100,000 each, and projects that show promise will have the with the opportunity for additional funding for projects that show promise.
